Undergraduate thesis project
Creating a space for Opportunity
The BDA (Bangalore Development Authority) had built Commercial Complexes in Key Areas which were highly residential some 40 years back, to be a commercial hub for the area. One such complex was built in Indiranagar, abutting the Old Madras Road. Now the Govt. Offices have moved out of the complex which has left the building in a crumbling and dilapidated state. The city of Bengaluru has experienced tremendous growth in the past 2 decades, due to it becoming the preferred destination for the IT sector.
The city is also now known for its many startups and has one the highest number of startups in the world. Due to the innovative yet volatile nature of a startup, there is a need for quality office space for small and medium enterprises (SME’s) in the city, that not only provides space but also facilitate creativity, innovation and collaboration in the city. Therefore by creating a Multi-use Complex that accommodates for SMEs as well as the general public, it could add value to the existing neighborhood by providing a space for opportunities. The aim of the Thesis was to design a multi- use building that is sensitive to the surrounding context as well as all the stakeholders involved, while creating a structure that adds value to the area and providing more opportunities for the people of the neighborhood and city.
Context Map
Space in-between the two buildings with access to the greenest part of the site with more tress, meant as a more relaxing space and is more introverted in nature.
Cultural center of the building which can be considered as the more extroverted space with access to retail stores, restaurants and art gallery.
The retail area comprises shops, cloud kitchens, restaurants, an art gallery, a public square, a library, and a theater. Since the building is intended for small businesses, unlike a traditional mall or commercial complex, the sizes of the shops and restaurants are smaller. However, they can still cater to a wide mix of businesses, offering a unique value proposition.
The office building functions as a co-working space, offering individual, group, and small office spaces catering to larger teams. Additionally, the facility provides workshops and services for rapid prototyping, creating a versatile environment that supports various work styles and promotes innovation.
The building also features a double-skin facade on its northern and southern sides, reducing the need for mechanical cooling and making the space more economical to run.
